Institute of History is a legal entity of public law in the sphere of science and innovation, subordinated to the Academy of Sciences of Moldova. The Institute's mission is to promote basic scientific and applicative research in the field of national history, to disseminate the results of scientific researches and their implementation in practice through the publication and editing of scientific works, their use in schooling and education, contribution to the training of high qualified scientific personnel, and other forms of activity.

Basic scientific research in the field of history of Moldova and world history is made in four institutional projects: medieval and modern society of Moldova in the context of Eastern and South Eastern Europe (coordinator c.m. D.Dragnev); Peculiarities of political, economic and cultural of Moldova in the 20th - early 21th centuries (coordinator: Dr. L. Bulmaga); Personalities, attitudes and scholarly values ​​in the system of national and European relations (14th - 20th centuries) (coordinator: acad. A.Eşanu); Regions and localities of Moldova's historical in medieval and modern ages (coordinator dr. hab. I.Chirtoagă).

The achievements of historians of the Institute of History are systematically are presented in national and international conferences, scientific sessions and symposia. The publications of institute's historians are highly appreciated in reviews published in scientific journals from the country and abroad, numerous references to them in various papers published in Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Greece, Germany, France etc.

Institute of History is the founder of the Journal of History of Moldova (1990) ISNN 1857-2022.
